Ask any professional and they will tell you the #1 accessory they use is a tripod. By using a tripod they can create better results, being clearer, crisper photos or smoother, less jumpy video images. The enemy when taking pictures or videos is uncontrolled movement of the camera. No matter how determined you are to hold your camera steady you can't eliminate camera shake.

Camera shake can become very obvious. For video, all you need to do is record and then hit playback. What you see at first will be an image with a semi-smooth movement when following the action. This soon turns into jittery images as the camera began to jump up and down due to arm fatigue. Mount your video camera to a tripod and you will eliminate the arm fatigue. Camera shake is also apparent when shooting with digital and photographic cameras. How many times have you deleted an image or thrown away a photo because an image was blurred, there by loosing that image forever. Also, enlarge a picture and you will see blurry edges within the image, again, caused by camera shake. The use of a tripod eliminates the problem of camera shake and the resulting lost images.

There is another issue seldom thought of at the time, but apparent once the images are being viewed. Wouldn't it have been nice if the person taking the images could also have been in some of the pictures? You can be in the picture. With digital or photo cameras, mount the camera to a tripod, frame your picture, set the timer and then get in the picture. When using a video camera to record for example, a birthday party, set the camera on the tripod, place the tripod in a safe area facing the scene, hit the record button, go get in the action, and forget about the camera. Some of the best video recordings are captured when the subjects are just being themselves and not acting.
